Character Profile; Nadia

Name: Nadia Lalji
Age: 17
Description: A friend of Michelle’s despite the fact that they are complete opposites, Nadia is very bubbly, energetic and a little bit self-centred, she loves to gossip and is a classic stereotype of annoying teenage girls. Despite their differences she manages to help Michelle discover the meaning behind her dreams. Nadia doesn’t have any proper problems, just superficial ones and when she is introduced in the opening sequence she cuts of Michelle’s train of thought and wants to gossip despite her friend being deeply troubled. This gives the audience an idea of the type of character she is.
Character Comparison; Jessica Stanley from Twilight

Jessica plays Bella’s “friend” in the Twilight saga. Both characters represent the bubbly, cheerful friend that is also a little bit self centred. Many films have used this stereotype but I think Jessica is probably the most similar to Nadia, in fact they only have one main difference which is their involvement in the overall film, Jessica is seen throughout the whole of the movie, whilst Nadia is only present in the first half, the second half mainly focuses on Michelle and the Natalie, this shows the audience that Nadia is less important to Michelle than Jessica is to Bella. Another similarity the two characters have, is that they try to stay out of any trouble, Nadia will help her friend to an extent, but she is reluctant to enter the mental institute. Both characters are represented as the typical teenagers who is always conscious of what their peers think, being popular and gossiping, they aren’t the main characters so there isn’t an overall development, but the audience can tell these characters are just generally happy by the way they are represented.
Character Profile; Natalie

Name: Natalie
Age: unknown
Description: She was a patient at a rundown Mental Institute, she was admitted there at a very young age with no evidence of the reasons she was sent there or her age, this makes Michelle and the audience unsure as to whether she should trust her or not, we don’t know if she is mentally deranged, unstable or psychotic and we don’t know what her intentions are. The fact that she is in a mental institute is the most important part of her character which is why we don’t focus much on the stereotype of her gender or her age, which is unknown.
Character Comparison; Samara from The Ring

Samara is a character from the psychological horror/thriller, because our opening sequence is just a psychological thriller, there are instant differences in the two characters. Samara is appearance a much more horrifying experience, she is quite scraggy looking and unpleasant this adds the scare factor, but Natalie on the other hand is relatively normal looking, she wears white shirt to indicate the mental institute, abut she is also wearing converses throughout, this baffles the audience, but adds a sense of reality to it; just because she is mentally unstable doesn’t mean she can’t wear normal trainers. I think Natalie is more of a subtle psychotic character, because we wanted the audience to be unsure if Natalie is a killer because of the hand in the blood, but in The Ring it is obvious that Samara is the person killing all the people through the video tapes. Another difference they have is that Samara has some form of supernatural power, but Natalie has no such powers, she just has mental instabilities. What these two characters do have in common is that they were both imprisoned falsely and against their will, this leads them to the edge of insanity and they both try to escape, this act of imprisonment demolishes their trust in the rest of the world, although we’re not sure what Natalie’s intentions are at the start. Also they both questioned as being a figment of someone’s imagination because Samara appears through the video tape and Natalie appears in Michelle’s dreams.
